Brief Description:

An international scientific society, the “Biophysical Society” is pleased to announce its Education Travel Awards.Students and postdoctoral fellows are eligible to apply for this travel award. The Biophysical Society’s Education Committee has limited travel support available for students and postdoctoral fellows who are recommended by their advisors to attend the 2018 Biophysical Society Annual Meeting.

Host Institution:

The Biophysical Society is an international scientific society whose purpose is to encourage the development and dissemination of knowledge in biophysics. Founded in 1958, the society currently consists of over 9,000 researchers in academia, government, and industry. Although the Society is based in the United States, it is an international organization.


  • The applicant must be accepted as a member with 2018 member dues paid by the abstract deadline, October 2, 2017.
  • The applicant must be a presenting author on an abstract in a poster or platform session at the Annual Meeting.
  • The applicant must not have received an education travel award previously from the Biophysical Society.
  • Only US citizens or permanent US residents are eligible.

For Students:

  • A copy of the abstract submitted for presentation at the Annual Meeting.
  • Distinct answers in a bulleted format to each of the following questions (1 to 2 sentences for each item is sufficient):
  1. Explain your role in the research project.
  2. At what stage are you of your undergraduate or graduate education/program?
  3. Why is it important for you to get a travel award to attend the Annual Meeting?
  4. Have you ever attended and/or presented at the Annual Meeting? If so, did you present a poster or platform?
  5. What is the long-range goal of your research?
  6. What is the significance of your research?
  7. What is the most novel aspect of your research?
  8. Explain any other source of financial support you have to attend the Annual Meeting.
  9. What is your mentor’s name, institution, and department?
  • A letter of recommendation from an advisor who is a regular member of the Society with 2018 dues paid.
  1. Letters must be on Institutional letterhead, with a signature.
  2. Where is the student in his/her degree program?
  3. Role of the student in project development?
  4. How is the student supported (training grant, research grant, other)?
  5. Has the student made presentations at previous Biophysical Society or other national meetings?
  6. Rate the student compared to others at the same stage.
  7. Identify any special considerations relating to need or appropriateness of a travel award.

For Postdoctoral Fellows:

  • A copy of the abstract submitted for presentation at the Annual Meeting.

Award Description:

  • Awards will be provided up to $500. Selection of awardees will be based on scientific merit.
  • Education, Professional Opportunities for Women, and International Relations Committee Travel Awards are distributed at the meeting (during designated awards receptions), no exceptions.
  • Committee for Inclusion and Diversity Travel Award recipients are reimbursed for travel expenses up to $1000 after the meeting has concluded.
  • If you cannot attend the reception, you may pick up your Travel Award check in person with proper identification at the Society Office after the scheduled award reception.
  • If you win a travel award, you must attend the meeting in order to receive your award check.
