At National Gallery of Art, the Center (Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts) encourages applications in the fields of the visual arts and culture of African Americans, Africa, and the African diaspora. The A. W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is open to those students who have received the Ph.D. degree. The Fellow will reside in Washington. The program supports research in the history, theory, and criticism of the visual arts of any time period or culture.
The programs of Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA) include fellowships, meetings, research, and publications. These are privately funded through endowments and grants to the National Gallery of Art. The CASVA founded in 1979 and located in the National Gallery’s East Building.
- Applicants must have received the Ph.D. degree within the five years preceding the next application deadline.
- Applicants for 2018–2020 must have received the Ph.D. degree between October 1, 2012, and October 1, 2017.
- Individuals currently affiliated with the National Gallery of Art are not eligible
