Brief Description:

The Mississippi State University would like to announce most prestigious freshman awards named as “Presidential Scholarships” and the “Provost Scholarships”. Students who show promise of meeting the high academic standards of the Shackouls Honors College will be admitted are invited to applying. University’s mission is to provide access and opportunity to students from all sectors of the state’s diverse population, as well as from other states and countries, and to offer excellent programs of teaching, research, and service.

The Mississippi State University for Agriculture and Applied Science, commonly known as Mississippi State University (MSU), is a land-grant university in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, United States, partially in the town of Starkville and mostly in an unincorporated area.


To eligible for both scholarships, the applicant must meet all the following criteria:

  • Presidential Scholarships
  1. Minimum 30 ACT or 1330 SAT
  2. Outstanding high school academic record with a scholarship GPA of 3.75 or higher
  3. Exceptional high school and community leadership
  • Provost Scholarships
  1. Minimum high school GPA of 3.75 or higher
  2. Minimum 30 ACT
  3. Be admitted to Mississippi State University

  • Applicant must write 500 to 600 words, write about one of the topics below
  • An essay can tell the things about you beyond your academic background of grades, test scores, and courses taken in high school and/or college. Please consider this when choosing your essay prompt.
  • Writing, painting, performing, debating, and designing solutions to complex equations are only a few of the media through which people convey their thoughts, emotions, and aspirations. How do you express the inner workings of your mind to the larger world? How does the world around you respond?
  • Submit the names and email addresses of two teachers who are willing to serve as your recommenders.

Award Description:

Each scholarship is awarded to 10-12 of the most outstanding entering freshman on a competitive basis.

  • Provost Scholarships
  1. Academic scholarship of $8,500 per year ($19,000 per year for non-resident).
  2. $4,000 scholarship for study abroad.
  3. A research grant of $1,500 for academic research and/or creative discovery.
  4. A one-summer optional tuition credit of $1,000 ($2,400 for non-resident) and one summer of free housing in Griffis Hall.
  5. An optional $750 travel grant to a conference (to be provided by Honors).
  •  Presidential Scholarships
  1. This scholarship is worth approximately $75,000, which covers tuition, fees, room and board, research fellowships, and books for four years of undergraduate study.
  2. Non-resident students may also receive a scholarship to cover up to 100% of the out-of-state portion of tuition.
  3. Presidential Scholarships replace Academic Excellence Scholarships.
