Brief Description:

The National Council of Jewish Women l Los Angeles (NCJW l LA) is now offering the NCJW l LA Scholarships. These scholarship programs are open to those who live and attend school in the Greater Los Angeles area, including Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and Ventura Counties. Twice a year, NCJW|LA awards financial assistance to applicants who have made a commitment to higher education to achieve a better future for themselves and their families.

Host Institution:

NCJW|LA is a section of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.

Eligibility:

  • The June Miller Nursing Education Scholarship:
  1. To women or men enrolled in or accepted to a degree program in nursing.
  2. Some units toward the degree are preferred, but not required.
  • Inger Lawrence-M.R. Bauer Foundation Nursing Studies Scholarship
  1. To women or men enrolled in or accepted to a degree program in nursing.
  2. Some units toward the degree are preferred, but not required.
  • Sylvia & Samuel Schulman Memorial Scholarship:
  1. An applicant must be a single mother entering or continuing school in an accredited institution in order to learn a marketable skill, which will lead to economic independence.
  • The Dodell Women’s Empowerment Scholarship:
  1. An applicant must be re-entering or continuing school in order to learn a marketable skill which will lead to economic self-sufficiency.
  2. The applicant must be a woman 25 years and older for whom the opportunity to return to school will lead to economic independence.
  3. The applicant can be either married or single, with or without children.
  • The Sherman & Frances L. Teller Teaching Credential Scholarship:
  1. A candidate must be a K-12 educator pursuing a multiple or single subject teaching credential (includes special education and ESL).
  2. The applicant must be enrolled at a University of California or California State University campus in the greater Los Angeles area.
  3. The applicant may be a man or woman.
  • Stephen L. Teller & Richard HotsonTv, Cinema, And Theater Scholarship:
  1. An applicant must be a full-time student enrolled in a community college Film/ Television/ Cinema/ Theater program, and preparing for a career in film, television, or theater production, other than acting.
  2. Applicant must have completed 12 units of classes in their school’s Film/TV/Cinema/Theater program and may be a man or a woman.

Supporting Documents:

The applicant must include the following in your application:

  • Personal Statement: on a separate sheet(s) of paper, write or type a personal statement on one to two double-spaced pages, 12-point font size, and maximum of 550 words.The following three questions MUST be answered in the personal statement:
  1. What are your long and short-term career goals?
  2. What are some of the obstacles or hardships you have encountered in returning to or continuing in school, and how have you worked with/overcome them?
  3. What would it mean to you to receive an NCJW | LA scholarship?
  • Two letters of recommendation on letterhead (preferably from teachers/employers)
  • Copies of unofficial school transcripts
  • Current enrollment verification from school

Award Description:

NCJW l LA provides scholarships, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, age, gender identity, sexuality or national origin for its 2nd cycle as the following:

  • $2,000- The June Miller Nursing Education Scholarship
  • $2,000-Inger Lawrence-M.R. Bauer Foundation Nursing Studies Scholarship
  • $1,000- Sylvia & Samuel Schulman Memorial Scholarship made in two payments of $500.
  • $1,000- The Dodell Women’s Empowerment Scholarship
  • $2,000- The Sherman & Frances L. Teller Teaching Credential Scholarship
  • $1,000- Stephen L. Teller & Richard HotsonTv, Cinema, And Theater Scholarship
  • The award money is to be used for tuition or other required school expenses only.
