Brief Description:

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is pleased to announce the one annual contest and one annual scholarship named as International High School Essay Contest & the African American Male College Scholarships Competition. The High School Essay contest is open to any high school senior. The college scholarship is open to only Utah high school college-bound seniors who are currently enrolled as college students, and who are Utah residents.

Host Institution:

The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated was founded on Friday, November 17, 1911, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. by three undergraduate students (Howard University juniors, Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper and Frank Coleman) and one faculty advisor (Dr. Ernest Everett Just). It is the first international fraternal organization.

Eligibility:

To eligible, the applicant must meet all the following:

  • International High School Essay Contest: The Contest is open to all college-bound, high school seniors who are Utah residents
  • African American Male College Scholarships Competition: The Contest is open to all college-bound, African American high school seniors and currently enrolled African American college students (Utah residents only)

Supporting Documents:

  • Submit an essay for International High School Essay Contest: The essay must be entitled: “What Actions Can You Take to Promote Social Justice and Embrace Diversity of All People?”
  • Submit an essay for African American Male College Scholarships Competition: The essay must be entitled: “Do Black Lives Matter? How have the current deaths due to police violence affected you? What steps would you take towards making Black Lives Matter to both police and ourselves?”
  • The essay must be original, neither previously published nor secured by copyright.
  • The essay must be between 700 and 750 words in length.
  • One typewritten 12 pt. Times New Roman font, double-spaced copy must be submitted

Award Description:

  • National High School Essay Contest will worth total $12,550 as the following:
  1. National Awards: Four College Scholarships: 1st Scholarship, $5000, 2nd Scholarship, $3,000, 3rd Scholarship, $2,000, and 4th Scholarship, $1,000
  2. Local Awards: Three College Book Scholarships: 1st Place Scholarship: $750, 2nd Place Scholarship: $500, and 3rd Place Scholarship: $300
  • The African American Male College Scholarships Competition: There will be two $1,000 college scholarships given to the winner
