Brief Description:

The United Nations, in its desire to promote the highest standard of excellence in political cartoons, has established this annual political cartoon award given in the international field. Here, the United Nations/Ranan Lurie Political Cartoon Award Committee is now accepting entries for its Ranan Lurie Political Cartoon Awards in honor of Mr. Lurie. The annual political cartoon award is an open professional individual from the international field.

Host Institution:

Ranan R. Lurie (born May 26, 1932) is an American Israeli political cartoonist and journalist, a senior associate at the CSIS (Center for Strategic and International Studies) since 1990,[1] a member of the United Nation Correspondents Association, Founder, and Editor-in-Chief of Cartoonews, a current events educational magazine.


  • Exhibits are limited to two cartoons per person.
  • The competition is open to political cartoonists from all over the world.
  • Entries for these awards may be made by any professional individual and should consist of political cartoons printed in any publication published anywhere, in any language.

Supporting Documents:

  • All exhibits should include a biography of no more than 75 words long, be written in clear English, and a picture of the entrant.
  • The cartoon reproductions will be accepted only as published, with the name of publication, language, and date included, accompanied by a newspaper reprint, and translated into English.
  • Reproductions must be presented measuring no larger than 8 1/2 x 11 inches.

Award Description:

To be awarded in the presence of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, thirteen awards will be granted:

  • 1st prize – $10,000 and a plaque
  • 2nd prize – $5000 and a plaque
  • 3rd prize – $3000 and a plaque
  • 10 Honorable Mentions in the form of plaques
